Through painting, drawing and installation, Maryam Hoseini creates liminal spaces that explore the construction of gender, and the violence of power. Probing the contours of subjectivity, fragmented architectural environments host scenes of collective drama where anatomised figures sequence in a midst of orgiastic acts of rebellion. Nude, opaque bodies perform liberally from one act to another, sliding through fissures in perception and identity. Diagrammatic interiors allude to a structural backdrop, where unrestrained desire rubs up against the authority of set institutional parameters. Hoseini depicts bodies as being intrinsically bound in architectures of power but not without agency, rather their expressions of desire flourish in the ruins of political failure.
