The 20th anniversary edition of miart opened its doors to VIPs yesterday with 156 galleries of modern and contemporary art and design on offer. 2015 marks a third year at the helm for director Vincenzo de Bellis, whose curatorially focused approach organizing the fair has been a boon to miart’s reputation globally. Seventy-two galleries—or nearly half of the fair’s total—have made the trip from outside the Italian border for this year’s edition, marking a new record. At the vernissage today, attendance and energy likewise appeared at an all time high.
Across miart’s four curated sub-sections, highlights abound. “Established,” the fair’s largest section at 105 galleries split between modern and contemporary sub-sections, sees a hoard of top-notch presentations from London’s ROD BARTON Gallery to Milan’s CARDI GALLERY. Curated by the Hepworth Wakefield’s Andrew Bonacina, “Emergent” welcomes 19 exciting young programs like Dubai’s Green Art Gallery. The Carnegie Museum of Art’s Dan Byers, Kunsthalle St. Gallen’s Giovanni Carmine, SculptureCenter’s Ruba Katrib, and independent curator Alexis Vaillant handpicked 18 galleries to create two-person shows of one young and one established artist for “THENnow.” And, in “Object” 13 design galleries such as Luisa Delle Piane present limited-edition pieces to the Milan public.
