Gateway: Structures of Meaning | Architectures of Perception
Curated by Hammad Nasar, with Sophie Persson
Structures of Meaning | Architectures of Perception invites us to consider artworks as structures through which 14 international artists experience and interpret the world. The works engage with ideas of constructing meaning through language, or through our navigation of space – our physical acts of moving, seeing and saying.
Some of the artists in this exhibition work with systems of notation and mark making, highlighting the role of language and translation. Others show a collective interest in books as structures of knowledge; and as sustenance and shelter. There are works that dissect the architectures that surround us: the visible, buildings and physical structures; and the encoded and implicit, involving social conventions and regulations.
Structures of Meaning | Architectures of Perception is an invitation for viewers to consider their journey through the exhibition; to inhabit the exhibition space; and to make their own meaning.
